Tea without microplastics in 100% recyclable packaging - the Franck standard

Autor: Franck d.d.

Sustainable packaging is no longer an added value, but an expected standard. This is particularly important in the tea category, as it is a product consumed daily and globally in large quantities. Every individual tea bag, wrapper and box forms part of a broader picture – the way we manage resources and waste.

For this reason, all Franck teas come in 100% recyclable packaging, designed to be functional, safe and aligned with the principles of responsible material management.

No plastic and no microplastics in tea bags

One of the most common consumer concerns relates to the presence of microplastics in tea bags. With Franck teas, there is no need for concern.

The filter paper is made from cellulose fibres and contains no plastic or plastic coatings. The material is biodegradable and compostable. The envelope containing the tea bag, as well as the tag and the box, are also made of paper, making the packaging fully recyclable.

For the premium Superiore tea line, the tea bags are made from PLA material – a plant-based polymer derived from renewable resources. This material is safe for food contact and does not contain conventional plastics.

In other words, consumers do not need to worry about microplastics in their cup of tea.

Compliance with regulations and packaging quality control

Each packaging material is subject to clearly defined specifications that include physicochemical parameters, food-contact safety requirements and the preservation of the product’s organoleptic properties throughout its shelf life.

Franck tea packaging fully complies with the applicable regulations of the Republic of Croatia, the European Union and all markets where the products are distributed. This ensures product safety, stability and consistent quality.

At the same time, we continuously monitor new scientific research and regulatory developments related to micro- and nanoplastics in tea bags to ensure that the materials used remain safe for packaging and appropriate for consumer health.

Packaging as part of a broader strategy

The Franck tea category has already transitioned entirely to recyclable packaging solutions, while sustainability remains a priority across other areas of the business.

During 2026, Franck will continue working on reducing packaging volumes in the coffee and cappuccino categories through material optimization and packaging design improvements. The goal is to reduce environmental impact while maintaining product functionality, safety and quality.

Reducing packaging, transitioning to recyclable materials and continuously adapting production processes are all part of a long-term strategy based on responsibility and measurable progress.

A responsible choice without compromise

In the context of growing global challenges – from waste to CO₂ emissions – packaging plays an important role. Simpler, recyclable solutions enable easier waste sorting and better integration into circular economy systems.

With Franck teas, sustainability is integrated directly into the product:

  • no plastic in filter paper
  • no microplastics in tea bags
  • 100% recyclable packaging
  • compliance with European and national regulations
  • certified sustainable sources of raw materials in part of the assortment

This means that consumers can enjoy their everyday tea ritual with Franck without concerns about packaging composition or its impact on the environment and human health.
