For many coffee lovers, a morning cup is a daily ritual. But there is an entirely different world — the world of the most expensive coffees in the world, where the price per kilogram reaches thousands of dollars and the story behind each bean is almost unbelievable. Luxury coffee today is not just about taste. It is a combination of rarity, specific climatic and geographical growing conditions, limited production and often unusual processing methods. Below, we present some of the most expensive and rarest coffees in the world.
Black Ivory Coffee – one of the most expensive coffees in the world
Origin: Thailand
Black Ivory Coffee regularly appears on lists of the most expensive coffees in the world. This rare luxury coffee is produced in an unusual way: Arabica beans are fed to elephants, pass through their digestive system, and are then collected, cleaned and processed.
During digestion, natural fermentation occurs, reducing bitterness and creating an exceptionally smooth flavor profile with notes of chocolate and spice.
The price of Black Ivory Coffee can reach up to 2,000 USD per kilogram, placing it among the absolute most expensive coffees in the world.
Yemeni Coffee - the cradle of the coffee trade
Origin: Yemen
Yemeni Coffee is considered one of the oldest and rarest coffees in the world. The historic port of Mocha originates from Yemen — the place from which coffee began spreading across global trade in the 15th and 16th centuries and after which coffee drinks in many languages were named.
Coffee in Yemen is still grown on steep mountain terraces, often at elevations above 2,000 meters. Due to the arid climate and traditional processing methods, most beans undergo a natural sun-drying process, which gives the coffee a highly complex flavor profile with notes of cocoa, dried fruit, and spices.
Because of limited production, challenging growing conditions, and strong demand among specialty coffee enthusiasts, certain microlots of Yemeni Coffee can reach prices of several hundred to over 1,000 USD per kilogram, placing it among the most expensive coffees in the world.
Panama Geisha – a record-breaking auction coffee
Origin: Panama (Boquete region)
Panama Geisha has become a symbol of high-end specialty coffee. This rare variety is grown in specific climatic conditions and at high altitudes, which significantly influence its aromatic complexity.
At international auctions, certain microlots have reached prices exceeding 10,000 USD per kilogram, making Panama Geisha the most expensive coffee ever sold at auction. Its flavor profile often includes notes of jasmine, honey, peach and exotic fruits, which makes it highly prized.
Jacu Bird Coffee – Brazilian coffee rarity
Origin: Brazil
Jacu Bird Coffee is produced from beans that have passed through the digestive system of the native South American Jacu bird. The fermentation process influences the final taste, while maintaining characteristic Brazilian notes of chocolate and nuts.
The price of this rare coffee can exceed 600 USD per kilogram.
Other luxury and rare coffees
The world of luxury coffee also includes other premium examples:
- Misha Coffee (Peru) – 600–700 USD/kg
- Jamaica Blue Mountain and Hawaiian Kona Coffee – premium coffees priced above average.
- Kopi Luwak – a well-known luxury coffee produced from beans that pass through the digestive system of the Asian civet.
The most expensive cup of coffee ever served
Luxury is not measured only by the kilogram. On September 13, 2025, at Roasters Specialty Coffee House in Dubai, a cup of coffee made from rare Panama Geisha (Gesha) beans from Hacienda La Esmeralda was served at a price of 2,500 AED (approximately 680 USD).
Prepared using the V60 method as part of a luxury tasting experience, it set the Guinness World Record for the most expensive commercially served cup of coffee.
Why are the most expensive coffees in the world so expensive?
The high price of the most expensive coffees in the world is driven by several key factors:
- extreme rarity and limited microlots
- specific growing conditions (climate, altitude, soil)
- unusual or lengthy processing methods
- auction sales where buyers bid for exclusive lots
- global reputation and strong demand
The most expensive coffees in the world are not part of everyday routines. They are an experience, an investment and proof of how sophisticated coffee culture can be.

What about exclusive coffees available closer to home?
While the most expensive coffees in the world are often reserved for auctions and collectors, lovers of exceptional flavor do not need to travel to Panama or Dubai to enjoy something special.
Franck regularly offers carefully selected Specialty Coffee lots in limited quantities, available through the Franck webshop under the Franck Specialty Coffee range. These are expert-curated selections, roasted to order to preserve freshness and full aromatic potential.
Specialty coffees are available as whole beans or ground — because each brewing method requires a specific grind size to fully develop the flavor notes in your cup. If you have your own grinder, you can order whole beans and grind them according to your ritual. If not, Franck will grind the coffee to suit your preferred brewing method.
The selection changes regularly depending on seasonality and lot availability, further emphasizing their exclusivity. That is why specialty coffee enthusiasts are encouraged to regularly check the current offer in the Franck webshop — each new lot brings a different story and a different flavor experience.
